Tatiana and Los Chicharrines El Paso Theatre reviews
Fun but VERY short concert...
I've been around for 48 years now, so I've always been aware of Tatiana and Los Chicharrines, even before they went solo. Thankfully, Lionel performed some of the Commodores' greatest hits during this concert, his first in the Mpls/St. Paul area in a very long time, and it's that stuff that I really like. I originally had a ticket to see him three months before this show when he was booked to play the XCel Energy Center with Mariah Carey as an opening act (a very odd choice for). That tour never happened, I got a refund on my ticket, and I figured that I wouldn't get to see Lionel for the first time ever after all鈥攗ntil this concert was announced. Outdoors on the grounds of the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, MN, a few miles away from Valley Fair, it was, thankfully, without an opening act. I was expecting to get wet since it had rained all day, but it didn't happen, which was good. I was also happy with my 7th-row right of center seat, which would have been impossible at the St. Paul show because the cost would have been much more than I could afford. This concert was so short, barely seventy minutes, with no encore, just hit after hit after hit, and then suddenly it was over. What really surprised me was Lionel's energy; for a sixty-eight-year-old man to work the stage the way he did was cool to see. Especially considering that this was the first night of his summer tour, and outdoors on a slightly chilly night to boot, I thought he was in fine voice. He moved from one end of the stage to the other, and back and forth from a grand piano to a microphone stand, clearly relishing his connection with the audience. Although I admit that the in-between song banter seemed scripted, that didn't matter, because the music was so good. I wished that he had performed full versions of "Sail On" and "You Are" instead of abbreviated versions, but that could have been because of a local curfew, and he may have needed to wrap things up quickly. I'm just glad that I got to see him at all because I never thought I would get the chance.
